The Federal Aviation Administration has extended the grounding of certain Boeing 737 MAX aircraft after inspectors discovered additional quality control issues at the manufacturer's facilities.

The expanded investigation covers potential problems with fuselage rivets and door plugs following the Alaska Airlines incident that saw a door panel blow out mid-flight.

"We will not allow these aircraft to return to service until we are completely confident in their safety," said the FAA Administrator.

Boeing shares fell 8% on the news, and the company warned that deliveries would be significantly impacted. Airlines are scrambling to adjust schedules and secure replacement aircraft.
