EU's Landmark AI Act Comes Into Force

The European Union's AI Act has come into force, establishing the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence and setting standards that are likely to influence global regulation.

The law classifies AI systems by risk level and imposes strict requirements on high-risk applications in areas like healthcare, law enforcement, and employment. Violations can result in fines of up to 7% of global revenue.

"Europe is leading the world in ensuring AI develops in a way that respects fundamental rights," said the EU's digital commissioner.

Tech companies have spent billions preparing for compliance, though some have warned that strict regulation could hamper European AI innovation.
