Taiwan Earthquake Disrupts Global Chip Production
Major 7.2 magnitude quake damages TSMC facilities, threatening supply of critical semiconductors for Apple and Nvidia.
A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Taiwan, causing significant damage to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company facilities and raising concerns about global chip supplies.
TSMC, which produces the world's most advanced chips for Apple, Nvidia, and other major tech companies, said it is assessing damage at multiple fabrication plants. Some production lines have been halted.
"Even a brief disruption to TSMC's production could have significant ripple effects across the global tech industry," said a semiconductor analyst.
Tech stocks fell sharply on the news, with Apple down 3% and Nvidia falling 4% on supply concerns.
