Iran Nuclear Talks See Surprise Breakthrough in Vienna
Tehran agrees to reduce uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief, marking potential turning point in diplomatic standoff.
Diplomatic negotiations over Iran's nuclear program have produced a surprise breakthrough, with Tehran agreeing in principle to reduce uranium enrichment levels in exchange for phased sanctions relief.
The deal, if finalized, would see Iran cap enrichment at 20% purity and allow expanded IAEA inspections. In return, the US and EU would lift certain economic sanctions over a two-year period.
"This represents significant progress after years of stalemate," said the EU's foreign policy chief. "Both sides have made difficult compromises."
Oil prices fell on the news as markets priced in the possibility of increased Iranian crude exports. However, hardliners in both Tehran and Washington have already voiced opposition to the framework.
