Venezuela Opposition Claims Victory in Disputed Election
Electoral council delays results as protests erupt across country over allegations of vote manipulation.
Venezuela's opposition has claimed victory in the country's presidential election, setting up a potentially explosive confrontation with the government of Nicolas Maduro.
Opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado said independent vote counts showed her coalition winning by a significant margin, contradicting the electoral council's initial silence on results.
"The people have spoken clearly," Machado told supporters. "We have won this election and we will defend our victory."
Protests have erupted across the country as citizens demand the electoral council release detailed results. The military, which has historically backed Maduro, has not yet made any public statements.
